Quartz crystals.
Hydrogenous mineral deposit.
Quartz crystal masses like this crystallize from silica-rich groundwater, filling in open fractures in bedrock. Quartz crystals occur in many places. This sample comes from a famous quartz crystal mining area in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. In tha region, quartz crystal masses like this are associated with a broad belt of quartz veins in sedimenary rock formations of Paleozoic age. The crystals formed on open fractures that formed during the Ouachita Orogeny (a mountain-building period along the southern Arkansas and Oklahoma region late Pennsylvanian time).
